14w3d

I know it has been a while since I updated.  I had my 14w1d appointment the other day and it was a little tougher than planned.  Things looked good on the ultrasound, my cervix is longer than 3cm which is apparently a good thing.  Our results for the Down's scan were 1/1700, which also seems like a good number.

For some reason the doctor still wants me to do an amnio.  I really don't want to do it.  I do not want some news that might cause either the doctor or H to recommend a termination.  I have already had 2 terminations and I really don't think I can handle another one.  H seems to think that if there is any kind of problem, we would have more time to 'plan'.  I think that is justification for making me do a test that I don't really see a point for.  We spent the rest of the day 'discussing' this and didn't get anywhere.  The dr wants me to do it in the next week or so in case there needs to be a termination scheduled, which basically just proves my point.

I haven't made any final decisions yet, please help.

I've been thinking about you. It's great to see an update.

I wish I had some great insight about the amnio. I have all sorts of mixed feelings about the procedure. It's times like these I wish that you were closer so we could chat face to face. Do whatever feels right to you. Gosh, I miss you!

it's a tough one, nicole. Is there something specific that your doctor is worried about? Did they do blood tests as well as the scan (they would measure free beta hcg, fetal alfaferroprotein and one other I can't remember)? Because the scan alone is not a great indciator, and at 14w1d you are actually too late to get an accurate nuchal fold measurement, it needs to be done by 13w.

If you really don't want to do it, and you are sure you could cope with a disability, then don't do it. You'll get more info at the 20w scan which will allow your husband to prepare if necessary, so you don't have to do the amnio just to be able to prepare.

I was going to say exactly what Thalia did. I even had my level II u/s at 18 weeks, not 20. That should definitely give you enough time to plan if there are indications of any kind of problem. I guess you didn't end up doing PGD?

Good news on your cervix, and that you're into your second trimester!!
